Why isn't my laptop connecting to my wireless modem?

I just recently purchased a Toshiba Tecra A1. Today I finally instaled Windows 7 to it. But the problem is that I can't connect to the internet without an cord. All I want is to connect to the laptop wireless. Do I need a new network adapter? If so, is there anywhere online where I can download for free?
