Looking for some internet help?

Im using a wireless internet and recently my roommate plugged his computer into a hardline and ever since my internet as sucked im getting like half a mega byte. Now when i unplug his ethernet cord from the router my megabytes jump up instantly. Why would this take up my internet bandwith even while his computer is off?
