Verizon wireless unlimited plan and grandfathering question?

I was told that you get grandfathered in if you get a contract by July 7, 2011, but does that mean forever or only for your current contract (usually 2 years)? I wasn't planning on buying a phone this early, and possibly waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out in Spring. I'm having trouble finding any articles online about it.
